What is NIE?

Número de Identidad de Extranjero — a permanent ID/tax number for foreigners. Required for property purchase, notary deeds, taxes, and utilities.

Where to Apply

  • Extranjería Alicante

  • Police stations with Extranjería

Required Documents

  • Passport (or EU ID) + copy + passport foto

  • Form EX‑15 (signed) + Paid Modelo 790‑012 fee (€9.84)

  • Purpose evidence: reservation/arras, draft contract, notary letter, or lawyer letter

Steps

  1. Book appointment

  2. Fill EX‑15 + generate Modelo 790‑012 online

  3. Pay fee (€9.84) at a Spanish bank

  4. Attend appointment with originals + copies

  5. Collect NIE certificate

Costs

  • Official fee: €9.84

  • Sworn translation (if needed): €30–€60/page

  • Apostille (if needed for POA abroad): €15–€30

  • Lawyer/gestor service: €150–€300

Timeline

  • Book 3–4 weeks before notary signing (appointments scarce in Alicante)

  • Get the Certificate: same day or within a week

  • NIE is permanent, but notaries may request certificate issued within last 3 months
